Elan’s January 2024 Playlist
January 2024’s full playlist is about 2 hours and 3 minutes long and has 34 alternative, pop/rock, R&B/soul, folk, rock, J-pop, singer/songwriter, easy listening, pop, indie pop, electronic, alternative folk, and pop Latino songs across 8 decades. 59% of the music is from 2023, and the songs are in reverse order by year and then in alphabetical order by artist within each year. This playlist is out on six platforms: Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Tidal (33 of 34 songs), Deezer, and Amazon Music (33 of 34 songs).
This month’s new music is much slower and quieter overall than most of my playlists, but that feels fitting for January 2024. There are a few louder standouts like Corinne Bailey Rae’s “New York Transit Queen” and underscores & gabby start’s “Locals (Girls like us)”, which act as nice bumps of energy to break up the gentler flow, but they’re not the main. It’s nice to slow down, necessary even, especially when we’re feeling the pressure to dive into setting goals and making promises. Believe me, January is never the time for that. Never. I’ve made it a rule that unapologetic naps and puttering around and doing absolutely nothing, not even reading, while drinking a hot beverage every day are non-negotiables in January 2024. If anyone tries bossing you out of these necessities, send them my way.
And don’t miss “Bad Side of the Moon” in honour of April Wine’s frontman and friend’s father, Myles Goodwyn, who passed away on December 3rd. His music wound itself into the soundtrack of my youth through the station wagon’s tinny AM radio/8-track player, showing me what summer would always sound like for a prairie kid watching the highway ribbon itself out endlessly from under the rear tires. Travel well, Myles, and thank you.
